Five Guys is the family-run burger chain that started as a single Arlington, Virginia counter in 1986 and now operates more than 1,700 locations across the United States and international markets. The menu is deliberately narrow — hand-formed beef patties, hot dogs, grilled cheese, milkshakes, and fries cut from fresh potatoes — and the toppings bar is free. A Five Guys gift card works toward the full menu at participating restaurants, including bacon cheeseburgers, Cajun fries, and hand-spun shakes.
The Murrell family built Five Guys around a handful of non-negotiables: no freezers, potatoes sourced from farms north of the 42nd parallel, and peanuts by the boxful in every lobby. The signature move is the overfilled fry cup dumped into a paper bag already slick with seasoning — a ritual regulars know by reflex. For travelers, Five Guys shows up at airport concourses and highway exits as a dependable second-act meal after a long flight or drive. Every dollar loaded onto a Five Guys gift card earns 1 Dyme Mile, redeemable on any airline, any hotel — no blackouts, no expiration.
The brown-bag-and-peanut-shell ritual travels well — Reagan National, Heathrow, or the exit off I-95, it's the same overfilled fry cup.
